At 5050 meters above sea level is located the mega computer that integrates the signals from the 66 antennas of ALMA, the largest astronomical observatory on Earth.
Everything at ALMA is extraordinary.
From its location on the exceptional Chajnantor plain, high in the mountains of the driest desert in the world, in Chile. To its technology, with 100-ton antennas that can move from one point to another on the plain and combine their signals producing images as those that would obtain an hypothetical antenna 16 km in diameter. Including its complex international collaboration of 21 countries from Europe, America and Asia, something never seen before in an astronomical project of this scale.
The path that ALMA had to travel from the 80s until 2013, when it began its operations, was full of challenges and problems of all kinds, which more than once put the project at risk: economic, political-institutional, scientific and technological.
The documentary 5050 The Story of ALMA will tell you this story.
